From Pressure to Progress: Managing New Aligner Pain with Nu Smile

If you’ve just started Nu Smile—or any clear aligner treatment—you might be wondering, “Does Nu Smile hurt?” While the answer varies from person to person, most patients experience some tenderness when they first switch to a new set of trays. However, this discomfort is normal, temporary, and very manageable. Continue reading to learn more about what to expect during your clear aligner treatment and how to make the adjustment easier.

Why Do Aligners Cause Discomfort?

Aligners work by gently shifting your teeth into new positions. For this process to work, the jawbone in the direction the tooth is being pulled is slowly broken down. On the other side of the tooth, the bone is healing. This is what causes the tenderness in your teeth.

This pressure is a sign that your treatment is working, but it can also leave your teeth and gums feeling a bit sore, especially in the first few days of a new tray. However, the discomfort usually fades after a few days.

How to Manage Nu Smile Tenderness

While the discomfort will eventually pass, it can be an annoyance while it lasts. Here are some great dentist-approved tips to keep your mouth feeling its best while you make the transition.

1. Stick to Soft Foods

If chewing feels tender, stick to soft, easy-to-eat meals for a day or two. Great choices include yogurt, smoothies, eggs, mashed potatoes, and pasta. Avoid anything super crunchy or sticky until your mouth feels back to normal.

2. Use Over-the-Counter Pain Relievers

If soreness lingers, talk to your dentist about safe pain relief options. Many patients find that a dose of ibuprofen or acetaminophen can make the first couple of days more comfortable.

3. Try a Cold Compress or Ice Water

Cold helps reduce inflammation and dull discomfort. You can sip cold water throughout the day or use a chilled compress against your cheek for short intervals. Just avoid chewing on ice. It’s not aligner-friendly!

4. Switch Sets Before Sleep

One smart trick is to switch to your new aligners right before bed. That way, your teeth do most of the adjusting while you sleep, and you skip the worst of the initial discomfort. A little rest goes a long way.

5. Keep Your Nu Smile Aligners In

It may be tempting to pop your aligners out to “take a break,” but that can actually make things worse! The more consistently you wear them (20–22 hours a day), the faster your mouth adapts and the smoother the process becomes.

If the tenderness is making you have second thoughts about using Nu Smile, keep going! Feeling a little sore now means your smile is getting straighter with every passing day. With a few smart strategies and a little patience, you’ll power through the discomfort and be flashing those clear, confident aligners in no time.
