PhysicaPhysical wounds like cuts, scrapes, or bruises are usually easy to spot on one’s own body. However, when it comes to tooth decay, the damage is not always visible to the naked eye. Some cavities, called interproximal cavities, form in between teeth, making them impossible to see. How can you if tell you have cavities between your teeth? Knowing the warning signs can help you seek treatment before tooth decay becomes a severe problem. Keep reading to learn which signs indicate you have interproximal cavities and what you can do to prevent them.

4 Signs You Have a Cavity Between Your Teeth

Tooth decay can worsen and spread if not caught early and treated. Keep an eye out for these four signs of an interproximal cavity:

Tooth Sensitivity

Cavities erode your tooth’s enamel and expose the inner nerves. As a result, sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures is a common symptom of tooth decay.

Toothache

Whether your tooth pain is mild or severe, you should contact your dentist right away if you experience a persistent toothache. No amount of tooth pain is normal.

Dark Spots or Holes

While less visible than cavities in other locations, you may still notice a dark spot form in between your teeth due to an interproximal cavity. Dark spots typically occur right before a hole forms within the tooth.

Pus

Pus may be a sign that a dental abscess has formed from your cavity. If so, that means the tooth decay has progressed significantly and you should seek dental care right away.

Tips to Prevent Cavities Between Teeth

Most cavities, including those that form between teeth, can be prevented by following these simple tips:

  • Practice excellent oral hygiene at home. This includes brushing your teeth twice a day for a full two minutes each time, flossing daily, and rinsing regularly with an antibacterial, nonalcoholic mouthwash.
  • Avoid frequently eating sugary, sweet, or acidic snacks to decrease your risk of tooth decay. Opt for tooth-friendly foods like carrots, apples, and celery instead.
  • Avoid tobacco products. Smoking, chewing, or even vaping tobacco can contribute to discoloration, decay, and gum disease.
  • Visit your dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and dental examination. Only a dental professional can remove hardened plaque from teeth before it leads to tooth decay.

By understanding the signs of cavities between teeth, you can know when to take action to protect your oral health. Talk to your dentist for more tips to prevent tooth decay between, behind, and on top of your teeth!
